Washington County Public Safety Training Center
Comprehensive public safety training center in Washington County
The Washington County Public Safety Training Center serves the county’s Sheriff's Department and law enforcement partners throughout the region. Scott Edwards Architecture partnered with the county to develop a comprehensive, flexible training center that would eliminate the need for multiple training locations, bringing the region’s disparate functions under one roof. To do this we adaptively reused an existing industrial building—we used the high ceilings to create a 2-story interior, maximizing the available space. The center includes areas for the administrative and training teams, classrooms, two 50-yard acoustically-buffered shooting ranges, an armory, defensive tactics training rooms, and a large scenario village. The site also has an emergency vehicle training course.

Make it stand out
The scenario village is in essence a project within a project. It accommodates as many unique scenarios as possible, incorporating elements like stairs and crawl spaces into the design, and is large enough for cars to drive through.
The building is a 1970s pre-engineered metal building originally used for cabinet making. Our adaptive reuse and addition brought the building up to code seismically to ensure future occupant safety.
