Moores Valley Residence

Gabled dwelling modernizes traditional forms

The Moores Valley Residence celebrates its agricultural context with a modern expression of the traditional gabled form. The home is placed in the middle of a 70-acre site, surrounded on all sides by rolling meadows. The clients’ love of music and entertaining, along with their desire to be able to age in place, drove SEA’s design and informed how we shaped spaces. Modernized agrarian materials like a metal roof, gridded steel windows, and stone fireplaces create a strong sense of place and relationship to the land.

The natural meadow of the site meets the home as the roof gables extend past the walls to provide a sense of shelter and dwelling space.

The house is slowly revealed as visitors arrive from the main road, drawing the eye to the front door while tucking the garage from view. This carefully crafted approach is made possible by the home’s composition into four separate gabled roofs. The forms at the front contain the great room, living and dining rooms, and the gym. The forms in the back contain the bedroom wing, media room, offices, and garage.

As part of their vision, our clients wanted to ensure they could comfortably age in place. The house is one story and includes at-home amenities like a gym and media room. The gym is connected to a guest suite and plumbed so that it can be converted into a kitchenette and bathroom should the homeowners ever need a live-in caretaker.

The Moores Valley Residence accounts for the clients’ love of entertaining. One of the homeowners is a pianist, so the great room’s vertical volume and open space offer a place to play music for guests on her grand piano. The oversized kitchen has two islands, supporting both food prep and party-worthy grazing tables, and a climate-controlled wine room keeps their collection perfectly chilled.
