Hilltop Residence
Artful home overlooks the rolling hills of Portland
The Hilltop Residence is placed at the top of a steep slope, positioned to overlook a meadow and mature grove of trees to the Southwest. The clients are a couple who have long-imagined a home on this site, and as they near retirement, envision it as a place for family gatherings and enjoying personal pursuits. The house’s offset volumes are arranged to define quiet, working, and living quarters while maximizing access to outdoor space and views. The interior balances calm living areas with delineated galleries to display an eclectic art collection. Interior and exterior materials are understated and timeless, with a restrained palette characterized by wood, steel, glass, brick, and stone. A central outdoor courtyard, screened on three sides by the home’s volumes, has a pool, pollinator gardens, and terraced landscaping. Hilltop Residence is pursuing Path-to-Net-Zero and applies sustainable design measures like ground-source heat pumps and solar energy.
