Vancouver Waterfront Gateway Affordable Housing
Vancouver affordable housing design responsive to Native American culture
Our Vancouver Waterfront Gateway Affordable Housing development is bringing 95 new apartment homes to Vancouver, Washington. The development’s site is near the Columbia River in the Vancouver Waterfront Gateway District, an active and evolving area of the city that offers residents walkability to parks, public transportation, and amenities. Scott Edwards Architecture is partnering closely with Colas Development Group, NAYA, and Colas Construction to design a building that is responsive to Native American culture, a community that will likely be served by this development. The architectural concept is influenced by Native American ancestry and tribal ties to the land and rivers—the exterior’s façade is inspired by the patterning of Native American-woven baskets made from native plants, the use of color and movement to represent the rivers, and movement in the building’s massing to visually break up its length while expressing the flow of a river. The design focuses on resident well-being by incorporating moments of culturally specific Native American expression, including interior and exterior spaces for gatherings and art displays, and interior access to daylight and views of nature. Sustainability measures like an all-electric building, on-site solar array, electric hot water heat pumps, healthy materials, and high-performing envelope all contribute to an impactful project prioritizing people and planet.
