Horizon

House’s volumes define spaces, immerse in high desert

Horizon offers sweeping views of the Cascade Mountain Range and high desert landscape. The architecture’s linearity is characterized by simple roof planes that flow uninterrupted from inside to out, and the home’s volumes are carefully placed to leave groves of mature Ponderosa Pines undisturbed, immersing daily life in nature. Breaking down the home’s volumes defines spaces, with the great room’s kitchen, living, and dining as the central common area and connecting bedroom, guest, and work wings as quieter, private areas. This approach to massing takes cues from Central Oregon’s agrarian history, a contemporary interpretation of agricultural vernacular where farmsteads often have multiple buildings.

The design works with the site’s natural slope to create descending courtyards and a pool terrace, allowing year-round outdoor living for this active family. Materials are timeless and of their place, with the palette composed primarily of wood, stone, and glass. Horizon applies wildfire mitigation strategies like appropriate siting, developing defensible space, and selecting rated assemblies and non-combustable roofing.
